Making mast hoops out of bamboo
Bamboo resists rot very well and is extremely strong.
972- Long strips of bamboo were bent into the proper shape then wrapped around a mould to set.
1296- Each strip had to be carefully shaped so that later epoxy glue could provide a strong bond for the rings.
972- Once cured the new mast hoops were shaped in the traditional manner and tested on the mast.
972- Each hoop was sealed with epoxy then leathered to prevent chaff on the mast. The leather was treated by soaking in a traditional mix of bee’s wax, lanolin, and turpentine.
