The Historic Vessel VEGA has undergone a complete refit of her interior spaces, hatches, and various deck structures employing massive pieces of exotic hardwoods and traditional craftsmanship throughout. This restoration was carried out using recycled hardwoods from broken up Indonesian sailing ships and traditional Balinese houses, many of which are well over 100 years old.
Vegas well-known activities in support of marine and coastal conservation demanded that although her refit should be done using the finest of hardwoods that wood could only come from proven sources that specialize in recycling tropical hardwoods of the finest quality.
When it was decided to refurbish the interiors of the Norwegian built historic sailing vessel Vega two things were considered paramount. The materials and workmanship had to be first class, and not a single new tree should be sacrificed for this work. The use of plywood, a material is neither known for its longevity nor available when Vega was built, would be held to an absolute minimum.
Even though Vega is officially classified and documented as a Historic Vessel it was felt that sacrificing trees for what many consider to be “pleasure” was out of the question.
