Vega sails to the Anambas Islands, Indonesia

Like I said in a recent post we are now out making deliveries of donated educational and medical supplies to some of the remote islands we assist. After all the COVID mess it feels as if we are starting all over again. This little film is from our recent voyage from Batam to the Anambas Islands. Hope you enjoy it. There will be more in the next few days – if the signal lasts – as we begin making those deliveries.

Historic vessel Vega visits an active volcano: Komba Island is a small isolated volcanic island located in the Flores Sea, Indonesia. The island is administratively part of Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. it is located approximately 70 km northeast of Lembata Island. The island contains Mount Batutara, a volcano that erupts every 20 minutes

1200: The remote Komba island consists of an active volcano, Batu Tara, whose first known eruption was in 1852.

800: The historic vessel Vega was about half a kilometre off the island, directly in front of the crater and its lava flows into the sea.

1200: It would be inadvisable to try to climb its peak in view of its persistent, frequent and intense eruptions.

1200: The thunderous noise of each Batu Tara eruption, which reached us some seconds after seeing each eruption, was enormous.

1200: It would be difficult to reach this island unless travelling on a boat, as we did.

1200: Pulau Komba is an oceanic, volcanic mountain rising from the seabed below. There are no other surrounding islands.
