Making the new jib Sheet on Vega

Having a traditional sailing boat demands certain skills most modern boat owners are not even aware exist. Here we go through the steps of making a new outer jib sheet complete with servicing the bullet blocks. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we did doing the work. Please feel free to share them around with your friends.

- Leathering the stropes
- Simon sewing the strop leathers
- Soaking the leather in Lanolin
- Meggi sanding down the bullet blocks
- Here are the basic elements for a pair of bullet blocks.
- Simon closes the strop around the newly varnished bullet blocks with a splice.
- Once spliced the whole is tared and served.
- Serving the splice makes it stronger and simply looks better.
- The servings are then tared again.
- once the tar has set we rub bees wax into the servings to protect the tar
- a touch of the heat gun swiftly seals the servings around the splice. If you want to be fancy a small turkshead knot goes nicely just behind the thimble.
