We have been supporting the midwives of East Timor since 2010 by providing equipment and teaching tools. This year we visited for the first time midwifes on Atauro island.
The midwives of Atauro Island have very little to work with but thanks to our supporters they now have a year\’s worth of supplies.
- Health post in rural Macadade. A remote community in the mountains of Atauro island.
- Indira Afonso midwife in Macadade and Vega crew member Meggi Macoun unpack supplies.
- Indira studied at the national university in Dili. Still she appreciates the resource book which is part of the Midwife kit delivered by Vega.
- Partus set
- The midwife kits provide simple, reusable tools to help make childbirth safer.
- A new Fetal doppler heart beat monitor was exactly what she needed.
- Fetal doppler heart beat monitor in action.
- A part of the expendables we delivered. The expendable supplies are important to maintaining standards.
- Macadade has no electricity. Vega's solar lamps come with battery and 2 bright LED lamps and are also portable for emergencies.
- In Macadade we meet Isabel Alfonso, midwife from Vila. She was amazed by the equipment and asked if we could also support the clinic in Villa.
- Vila is the centre in Atauro island and home to the main Maternity clinic. New building and nice furniture but general lack of medical equipment. This is one of the problems we encounter in East Timor regularly.
- The clinic got 2 midwifes and one doctor. They are responsible for the immunisations on the island and offer free family planning. It is good to meet such a young and enthusiastic team.
- Needless to say eveybody was very happy with the supplies we could spare for them.
- One of the most important pieces of equippment in our midwife sets is the Fetal doppler heart beat monitor. We delivered two new ones.
- Solar emergency lights for the Ambulance. We hope to be able to support more of the midwifes on Atauro island in the following years.
