Jotun Provides Historic Vessel Vega More Than Paint
In early 2006 we approached Jotun Indonesia to sponsor historic vessel Vega with paint. Marine coatings, especially anti-fouling paints are a huge recurring expense for us. Weeks passed with no response. Then out of the blue, Bjorn Abraham Bache, the Norwegian president of Jotun Indonesia responded he would be pleased to sponsor Vega. His next sentence sent our eyebrows soaring. Bjorn Bache knew the family who built Vega and wished to put us in contact with them. He added the e-mail address for Lars Nerhus, a great grandson of Ola Nerhus, the man who built Vega. Lars lives on the boatyard / farm where Vega was built.

Contacting Lars Nerhus provided us with a wealth of well-documented information about his great grandfather and the boats he built. Lars also sent us photographs of an 1898 painting of Vega done by his grandfather who skippered Vega from the time she was launched and the half model of Vega which won an award at the great exhibition in Oslo, also in 1898. A series of highly informative e-mails brought out more information about Vega’s early life up until she disappeared in 1908. My next post will delve deeper into the history of Vega.
