Donations needed for 2023

The Historic Vessel Vega Foundation is maintained and operated on a volunteer basis by Shane Granger, Meggi Macoun, with help from an extended group of friends who believe that together we can make a difference in the lives of a few remote communities. We are not out to change the world. All we want to do, in our own small way, is help others in a manner that makes a meaningful difference: by delivering training, tools, educational, and medical supplies donated by friends who want to help, directly into the hands of those who need that help. If you would like to join in our efforts, there is much to be done. Your participation will be very much appreciated.

Pick up points for donations are Batam (February), Singapore (February) and Jakarta (March). For exact dates please contact Historic Vessel Vega.

Kits for Kids backpacks

In 2013 the Historic vessel Vega implemented the ongoing Kits-4-Kids to provide school supplies for students living in some of the poorest rural communities of Indonesia and East Timor. This program consists of students and their parents from Malaysia, Singapore, and Jakarta who purchase a new back pack then fill it with specific educational items from the list below. They then add a personal touch such as a small stuffed toy, letter about who they are, and often a photograph of themselves. For next year’s deliveries, we need more K4K bags by February 2023.

1 x School bag (sturdy backpack type, no wheels or hard frame please) The kids often walk a long way every day, and the bag has to last for years.

Medical supplies & hardware

We support midwifes and health posts on isolated islands in Indonesia and remote communities in East Timor. Usually we purchase the bulk of our pharmaceuticals and medical equipment in Jakarta. We do this for several important reasons. Firstly, the cost is better than either Singapore or Malaysia; secondly the instructions are in Bahasa Indonesia so the midwives and health worker we assist can easily understand them. But, most importantly the Indonesian ministry of health approves them, avoiding regulatory issues. The budget for medical equipment depends on the funds we raise. Normally we participate in Boat shows and organize open House events on Vega to raise money, but due to the covid restrictions these activities have not been possible since 2020. We are extremely grateful for contributions toward the purchase of these supplies.
